THE STATE CLEAN
Results of the "off year" election out in the state exceeded the fondest hopes of the most optimistic Democrats and bore out the contention that at the first opportunity the people of Kentucky would in an unmistakable way emphasize their desire for a change in the State government, says Will Kaltenbacher in the Louisville Times. So far as the next State race is concerned the Democrats are greatly heartened and the Republicans correspondingly depressed over the outcome of the recent election.
Democratic achievements include the control of the State Senate; an overwhelming majority in the House of Representatives; the redemption of four judicial districts and election of Democratic officials in a dozen of heretofore rock-ribbed Republican counties. Among the Republican counties that turned turtle were Crittenden, Christian, Hart, Greene, Green, Muhlenberg, Mason, Grayson, Pike and Letcher. Democratic gains were confined to no particular section, but were general from the Big Sandy to the Mississippi rivers and from the Ohio river to the Tennessee line.
The election returns were particularly gratifying to the Kentucky Congressmen as they plainly indicated what might be expected next year, according to the party leaders. Tuesday's election was the start in a move that will not be concluded until a Democratic Governor and other State officials man the Capitol at Frankfort and Kentucky's electoral vote is placed in the Democratic column in the Presidential election of 1924.
