An attempt was made to hold-up a car in which Mrs. John K. Goode and Miss Goode, wife and sister of Rev. John K. Goode of the Salem Baptist Church, Salem, Va., were riding Monday night, March 16th. Mr. Goode is a former pastor of the Drummondtown Baptist Church.
Mrs. Goode and Miss Goode were on their way home from Roanoke, between 8 and 9 o'clock, when, on a lonely stretch on the highway, only a short distance from Salem, a car, which had passed them at the toll gate at Washington Heights, stopped in the middle of the road. As it stopped a man emerged, waving his hand for them to stop their car.
Mrs. Goode, who was driving, saw a chance to squeeze by on the side of the road and went by them. As soon as the women reached Salem, the chief of police was notified, but the police car sent in chase of the offenders, was unable to locate the culprits.
