RALEIGH, Oct. 26, 1848.
Your interesting letter of the 22d instant has been duly
received, and in reply I have to state that we have well
grounded hopes of carrying North Carolina for Cass and
Butler. The democrats are aroused, and will doubtless
poll their full strength. I learn from good authority, that
the counties west of Raleigh will hold their own—that is,
will sustain the vote cast for Reid in August last—and if
so, the State is ours; because I feel confident the counties
east will roll up from 1,200 to 1,500 more votes than they
gave Colonel Reid.
