On the northern side of this spring, a beautiful bank rises gently from the water. While this country was under the British Crown, an English Factory, for the Indian trade, stood upon this spot. The force with which this fountain gushes from the bowels of the earth, is so great, as to agitate strongly the surface of a column of water more than 250 feet in height.

The Big Spring, source of Wakulla River, is nearly one mile in circumference with highly transparent water impregnated with decomposed limestone and sulphate of lime. A lead lowered 250 fathoms did not reach the bottom. It maintains low temperature even in warm weather and is not palatable. A beautiful bank rises on the northern side where an English Factory for Indian trade stood under British Crown. The fountain gushes with force agitating water over 250 feet high.
