Full Text

Remarkable Spring. Near Tallahassee, the new capital of Florida, is the Big Spring, the source of Wakulla river. It is nearly one mile in circumference. The water, which is highly impregnated with decomposed limestone, is almost as transparent as air itself. It is said that a lead has been lowered with 250 fathoms of line attached, without reaching the bottom. In the warmest weather the temperature is very low. The water is not palatable to drink being highly impregnated with sulphate of lime.

On the northern side of this spring, a beautiful bank rises gently from the water. While this country was under the British Crown, an English Factory, for the Indian trade, stood upon this spot. The force with which this fountain gushes from the bowels of the earth, is so great, as to agitate strongly the surface of a column of water more than 250 feet in height.
