NEW YORK- (Special)
President Eisenhower heaped praise on race newspapers here Saturday on eve of celebration of Negro Newspaper Week, citing that they had contributed highly to the spiritual progress of the nation.
Besides release of the President's message of praise, the National Newspaper Publishers Association also announced winners of the annual John B. Russwurm awards given in honor of the founder of America's first Negro newspaper.
Lauds Role
The President lauded the role of the race press in contributing to the cultural, social and civic progress of the nation as one of its important cogs and noted that exactly 125 years had passed since the first race newspaper published.
A nearly nation-wide radio program was held Sunday in commemoration of the annual celebration, as spearheaded by Louis E. Martin, NNPA president.
Winners Named
Winners cited for "upholding the highest traditions considered as the ideals of the American way of life" were:
Mrs. Mary Church Terrell of Washington, D.C.; Author Ralph Ellison; United States Appellate Court Judge Charles Fahy of Washington, D.C.; the Federal Bureau of Investigation; former President Truman's Committee on Government Contract Compliance, led by Dwight R. G. Palmer.
Also Dr. Charles S. Johnson of Fisk University; former United States Solicitor General Philip B. Perlman; Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt; Delaware Judge Collins Seitz; and Roy Wilkins, administrator for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
