The Committee of Investigation has closed its labors, and reported. Edwards has resigned his appointment to Mexico—prepared he says, to remain in the U. States and defend himself at any point where he is assailed. The Report has not reached us—and the National Intelligencer reflects no light upon the nature of its contents. We give an extract from the Washington Republican of considerable interest—purporting to present an outline of the Report—which it represents to be brief—to be very much in the nature of an echo of the former Report of the same Committee—acquitting Mr. Crawford of all improper motives—and perhaps from any excessive mismanagement of the Public Treasure.—He has here and there, loaned a sum of money to a Bank, without authority of law—and in the course of his transactions with banks, has lost at different times and places considerable sums.—All this ought to be overlooked for the sake of the purity of the motive—and in consideration of his complicated duties, and the pecuniary character of the times. We presume that the Committee has acquitted Mr. Crawford of all design of betraying his trust. We have never doubted from the first that he was entitled to such an acquittal. Edwards, we infer, has escaped without that reprobation which the Crawford papers insinuated he would receive from the Committee.
We are prepared to hear from the partisans of Mr. Crawford, the most extravagant exultation on this occasion. Why in the name of Heaven? Is it a matter of triumph that he has turned out an honest man? They really seem to have half believed Edwards' charges themselves, from the great joy they manifest, upon the discovery of Mr. Crawford's purity. This purity has never been assailed by any individual of weight or distinction. They insult the Secretary of the Treasury, by their congratulating him on his not being a rogue. They ought to do something for Ninian Edwards—He has helped Mr. Crawford, more than all the Caucus or Caucus Addresses in the nation.
NINIAN EDWARDS.
We congratulate the country on having got rid of this precious Ambassador—of whom it is hard to say, whether he is more fool or knave.—Never was there so bungling an intriguer, since intrigue was employed as a political agent!!
