LITERARY.

The announcements of some of our publishers are fertile of interest; those of Messrs. Appleton include among others the following forthcoming literary novelties: A racy and highly piquant volume on the "Living Authors of England," by Thomas Powell, esq., author of several popular works: a beautifully embellished volume, entitled "Women of the New Testament," with sixteen engravings on steel, and "The Four Gospels Illustrated." both designed for presentation books at the ensuing holidays: "The Literary Gem," an illustrated volume; Exercises in Greek Composition, Seame's and Velasquez Spanish Dictionary. Prof. Johnson's edition of Cicero's Orations, Prof. Thatcher's Cicero de Officiis, &c.: also Byrne's elaborate and valuable work on Machines, Mechanics, and Engineering, which is to form 2,000 pages, to be embellished by as many illustrative engravings, including 1,000 examples of American machinery, &c. We understand the entire cost of this important production is not expected to be less than $35,000. Mr. Putnam has ready for immediate publication Mr. Irving's new work, Oliver Goldsmith, a biography: the Crayon Reading Book, by the same author, comprising selections from his various writings, designed for the use of schools: Prof. Howe's Practical Elocutionist, Lanman's Letters from the Alleghany Mountains, Johnston's Universal Atlas of historical, commercial, and political geography, in folio: Prof. Gray's Genera of Plants of the United States, with one hundred plates; Lieut. Kingsbury's Treatise on Artillery and Infantry, and an illustrated edition of Warburton's "Crescent and the Cross."

The Harpers also have several works in preparation. They publish this week, first part of Thackeray's new work, the "History of Pendennis"-a work said to be fully worthy of the humorous and racy pen of its author. They also issue a thoroughly revised annotated edition of the works of Horace, by Prof. Anthon; and a History of the American Bible Society; from its first organization to the present time, by the Rev. W. P. Strickland. Ticknor, of Boston, is about to publish the poetical works of Robert Browning, as recently collected by himself; also, a new volume by Hirst, the author of "Endymion," entitled "The Penance of Roland, a romance;" the complete poetical works of T. K. Hervey, and a collective edition of the productions of De Quincey, the "English Opium Eater." Little & Brown announce a reprint of Spier's French Dictionary, which is pronounced by the critics a faithful work by an accurate scholar; they also propose to publish Lord Campbell's "Lives of the English Chief Justices," simultaneous with the English edition by Longman & Co. Phillips & Sampson are about to issue, by a similar arrangement with the London publisher, Lamartine's "History of the French Revolution of 1848"-a work that is said to discover, in an eminent degree, the author's penchant for the poetical. Gould, Kendall and Lincoln announce Prof. Agassiz's "Tour to the Lakes"-a work that will doubtless excite considerable attention among the learned, and which the author's engagements have prevented his finishing till the present time. Crosby and Nicholas, also of Boston, have in preparation a "Cheap Religious Library," comprising volumes of sermons, sacred poetry, biography, &c. Dr. Burnap, of Baltimore, and Rev. Mr. Muzzy, author of the "Young Maiden," are contributors to the series.
