The court of Spain have it in contemplation to establish a colony in Trinidad, which is admired as an earthly paradise, containing all the luxuries and conveniencies of life. It is situated in the Atlantic or American ocean, separated from the province of New Andalusia, in Terra Firma, by a narrow strait, called Bucco del Drago. In the year 1498 it was discovered by Columbus; in 1595 taken by Sir Walter Raleigh; in 1676 taken by the French, who extorted from the inhabitants 80,000 pieces of eight to save their houses. It has for more than a century remained in the possession of the Spaniards.
