Full Text

The masses of the people in London are said to be in an appalling condition of destitution and misery. Those who go through the quarters of the British metropolis which are inhabited by the poor and the helpless, are overcome with terror at the sight of the horrors in those wretched regions. Naked children covered with filth and vermin; women in rags, with expressions of countenance stupefied and brutalized by penury and drink; haggard-looking men, the pictures of despair: such is the woeful spectacle presented at this time in the capital of the English nobility and gentry. How long can such a mockery of civilization last without bringing a fearful retribution upon the landed and moneyed oligarchy?
