The temper and spirit displayed by the Argus ever since a disposition has been manifested among the different interests in our community, to forget all party spirit and animosity, has been such, as to excite no little surprise in those whose greatest zeal is for public good. It would seem from the violence with which perpetual strife in political subjects is urged in that paper, that every better feeling was extinguished by unquenchable party rancour. If readers can be found with sympathy for such sentiments, we envy them not their feelings; but for the honour of human nature we must believe their number too small to disturb the peace and harmony of society. Some indeed, and the writer of the articles alluded to may be one, are found in every community, whose habits are so depraved or perverted that they can find no pleasurable existence but in natural or moral distemper; some who love to excite storms and tempests in the political ocean that they may plunder the wrecks. To such dispositions alone can the bitterness and asperity displayed in attempts to fan the flames of civil discord, be found congenial; and to all the satisfaction resulting from their own reflections on such prostration of character, we freely leave them. In a country so well informed, and so well regulated by religious as well as moral sentiments, we cannot believe the poison will be dangerous.

On the subject of Massachusetts claims, the venom of democracy is poured out without measure. Nothing can satisfy the relentless Juggernaut of party but the sacrifice of Gov. Strong, and the wisest and best men in the state, his advisers and approvers. Do this and place Messrs. Crowninshield and King, in the executive and all the writers and readers of the Argus in legislative and other offices; and the Massachusetts claims will be just, honest and paid on the nail. Until this is done and all who attended the Hartford Convention are hanged or burnt, not a word must be said to Congress.
