Full Text
Chief Justice Cartter, of the District of Columbia, issued a warrant on Friday night on the requisition of the Governor of South Carolina, for the arrest of Senator Patterson. Simultaneously with the Senator's arrest, a petition for a writ of habeas corpus was presented to Judge Humphreys. The petition alleges that Patterson has committed no crime in South Carolina; that he has continued to reside in Washington temporarily as a Senator, and therefore it cannot be said, in the terms of the requisition, that he is a fugitive from justice. It also alleges that the indictment on which the requisition was based was not found at the regular term of Court, and is therefore invalid. Judge Humphreys postponed the hearing of the application until the 17th inst., two days after the meeting of Congress, Mr. Patterson giving bail in the sum of $2500. An ordinary thief would have been sent to jail at once.
