Facts for the People.—The increased and constantly increasing expenditures of Government are alarming, and appeal with force to every tax payer and voter. We will give a statement of the annual expenditures from Jackson down.
Jackson's administration $27,585,896 39
Van Buren's 35,640,486 36
Harrison and Tyler's 27,623,558 13
Polk's 43,097,916 51
Taylor and Fillmore's 55,442,481 00
It will be recollected that during the administration of Mr. Polk, the Mexican war entailed millions on millions of additional expenditures. Why then is it that the expenses of the administration in time of peace with "all the world and the rest of mankind," double those of Jackson's; and are twenty five per cent higher than during Mr. Polk's most able conduct of the Mexican War? The answer is found in the payment of Galphin, Gardiner and Crawford swindling claims, whereby the people have been defrauded out of hundreds of thousands at a time; and the times have come at short intervals.
It ought not to be forgotten that Gardner is now under indictment for receiving the money which was paid to him on his claims. Why has not Crawford a prominent member of the Cabinet, about the same time, who got for himself and friends three or four times as much as Gardiner did, been indicted.
The people call loudly for a change which will protect them from these common swindlers, and are bound to elect Pierce and King for that purpose.—Dem.
