Dinner To Be Given At
La Concha Hotel One Of
Outstanding Features Of
Program
Official announcements of the
Commander's Dinner at La Concha
Hotel, 8 p. m., Saturday.
July 29, as one of the first events
on the program for the Fifth District
Conference of the American
Legion, were being mailed today
by Arthur Sawyer Post No. 28 to
public officials, prominent individuals and officers of various
commercial, civic, social, fraternal
and patriotic organizations.
This is in line with Arthur
Sawyer Post's decision to enlist
the co-operation of all civic-
minded Key Westers in a municipal demonstration of good-
will at a public dinner to be addressed by such prominents as
Congressman Pat Cannon, who
undoubtedly will have an important message, and Florida Department Commander William T.
Brooker of Tampa.
It is believed by Dr. A. M.
Morgan, general chairman, and
R. A. Lehmann, entertainment
chairman, of Arthur Sawyer
Post, that every one of the 350
seats in the dining room of La
Concha will be reserved for this
civic affair designed to impress
the 200 delegates to the conference of the sincerity of Key
West's welcome and her desire to
entertain the Legion state convention here in 1941.
Delegates to the conference
will represent 22 Legion Posts
and their attendant auxiliaries
from Vero Beach to Key West.
They will be a powerful factor
in supporting Key West's bid for
the 1941 convention, which other
cities are seeking. With the backing of all of southern Florida
dele gates to the 1940 state convention, Key West will stand a
good chance of landing the 1941
meeting, Sawyer post members
believe.
Tickets for the Commander's
Dinner are to be placed at several convenient points, so they
may be procured as early as possible by the general public. Only
the cost of staging the dinner is
covered by the price of each ticket because the American Legion
at this time is unable to finance
it alone.
Besides a high-class meal, the
dinner will be marked by a program of speaking, featuring Congressman Cannon, State Commander Brooker, State Chaplain
Dick Evans of Delray Beach and
State Adjutant Howard Rowton
of Palatka. Short speeches of
welcome will be given by Mayor
Willard M. Albury, State Representative Bernie C. Papy, County
Commission Chairman Carl Berverly and other public officials.
Working with Chairman Lehmann in arranging the dinner are
former Commander William
Reardon, former Commander
Fred Lucas, Fred Marvil and Bill
Lee. They have arranged for an
orchestra and for appearance of
a few smart entertainers on the
dinner program between courses.
A complete list of official guests
and a partial list of those expected at the dinner will be announced later, Chairman Lehmann said.
In connection with the post's
dinner to the delegates and visiting Legionnaires at Fort Taylor
Sunday afternoon, July 30, it was
announced today that the members of the Junior American Legion baseball team, which is making a fine showing in the state
competitions, will be among the
guests of honor.
