Full Text

Judge Peck.—The letter writers from Washington attach considerable importance to the impeachment and trial of Judge Peck. The whole case grows out of a controversy between the Judge and Mr. Lawless, an Irish Barrister whom the Judge imprisoned for contempt. So far as I am possessed of the cause, I cannot but think that the Lawyer and the Judge were both in the wrong. One thing is very certain: the gentleman from Erin has made a large draft upon Congress in seeking redress for his personal wrongs, if he has sustained any. The country would have been none the worse had he remained on the other side of the water.—Can. Gaz.
