Full Text

It isn't often that a man really kills two birds with one stone. But Mr. Sunset Cox really seems to have accomplished that feat with his letter to the Irish Convention in Philadelphia. At least this has been suggested on all sides here. On the one hand his district is Irish to a degree, and after that letter he ought to be sure of perpetual re-election with or without a regular nomination. On the other hand, are there not various professional Irishmen, so to speak, in the next House of Representatives, and is not Mr. Cox a candidate for Speaker! The Hon. "Pat" Collins, of Massachusetts, and John F. Finerty, of Chicago, will be in the next House. William E. Robinson, of New-York, would probably vote for Mr. Cox anyhow. But there are also Patrick B. Tully, of California; J. H. Murphy, of Iowa; Robert W. Fyan, of Missouri, and Martin A. Foran, of Cleveland, with others. That letter may bring Mr. Cox half a dozen votes, and it makes his canvass almost formidable.
