HIS OWN PRETTY BIRDS
Little Rock. Ark.-Tom Redman makes his own canaries and Mexican finches, the police found out.
After they had observed him trapping English sparrows on a roof adjoining his room, and later in the street exhibiting birds of brilliant plumage but no bigger than sparrows, they followed him home last night in the guise of customers.
"I'll take $11 for that pair," Redman was quoted as telling them when they priced two of his prettiest red birds.
The room was filled with cages of birds of all colors. In one cage the officers found a half dozen sparrows and nearby an improvised drier, heated by an electric bulb, in which several birds were undergoing the drying process. The policemen then picked up a pair of rubber gloves and several bottles of dyes and bleaching materials.
They arrested Redman for investigation, and quoted him as saying he obtained $1 each for many of the birds, and sometimes $3 a pair.
