Aid Sit-Ins
PHILADELPHIA (VIP)
Joining the forces of admirers and endorsers of constitutional rights, local socialites presented $5000 to the Hon. Hubert Delaney of New York at a "Dollars for Sit-Ins" dinner.
More than 250 civic-minded persons turned out to hear Delaney and Carl Matthews, one of the sit-ins.
The $5000 gift is to be used for sit-ins.
Another gift of $846 was presented to Atty. A. Leon Higginbotham, president of the local NAACP.
Matthews, who sat in a N. Carolina variety store for five hours by himself, stated that the spirit of the new Negro is such that he is willing to lose his job, prestige and even his life by means of passive resistance so that Negroes may have dignity. "Negroes no longer want democracy on the installment plan, but now - they have earned the right of freedom. Segregation must be as embarrassing to our country as it is to us."
Judge Theodore O. Spaulding, chairman of the dinner, said that the young demonstrators had "awakened its older generation" and he saluted them and their supporters who have contributed financial aid.
Appearing on the program also were Miss Natalie Hinderas, pianist, who had recently returned from a tour under the auspices of the State Department, and Camilla Williams.
