Mr. EDITOR,
The Legislature of this State, in its wisdom, passed a law that converted the county court justices, into stock brokers--as it were by the art of hocus pocus - by the way, it has been remarked that we Virginians are fit for any thing--what we call Jacks of all trades. The justices are made brokers to settle the exchange of the various description of bank notes, and the justices of Norfolk county, to save the trouble of calculation, and to avoid odious distinctions, have put all upon the same footing--so that you can get in the county, a Virginia bank note, upon the same terms, that you can get District or Baltimore notes, and in five minutes, come in the Borough, and exchange your Virginia notes at a premium of eight per cent. A great many persons, are it is said, actually engaged in the business, and it is nothing for a man to make his hundred per cent. per day, and all by the wisdom of the justices of the county.--There will be some, who will doubt, but sir, the matter is of record, and District and Baltimore notes, are as good as Virginia notes, fact to the contrary notwithstanding.
And in our Borough, we have men, as wise, as the Justices of the County--the Common Hall have passed a law, that the warm weather shall not spoil meat--they have passed what they call an ordinance, whereby you may keep meats in the hottest weather, as long as you please, without the fear of spoiling--but if perchance that should happen, you can fast one day, and if you do not incline to do that, unsound provisions, are more tender, and better for epicures. Long life to the Justices of the County, not forgetting the Common Hall. P. P.
