CHOLERA IN THE WEST.

Dunn, Wis., Aug. 28.

Bro. Burr: - Within a few weeks, the cholera, which has prevailed in St. Louis, and some parts of Illinois ever since last May, has commenced its destructive work in Wisconsin. Janesville and Madison have lost several citizens. At Watertown, Jefferson Co., there have been seven cases per day. But we are happy to learn that none have been attacked without warning.— There has been no case, to our knowledge, where either intemperance or over-doing has not been the predisposing cause of the attack. Three have died out of one family in Jefferson Co.; but they had eaten very heartily of cucumbers and other green stuff. But temperate habits, cleanliness and quiet minds do not always exempt from attack, for some of the most respectable and sober have fallen, yet it is true that cholera & intemperance are co-workers in the business of human destruction. Persons have, through fear, dosed with brandy and wine. Our best doctors tell us that when such persons have been attacked, remedies have entirely failed to produce their wonted effect.

Intemperance is prevailing to an alarming extent in the west. Among all classes you will find the tippler. I do not mean to say that we have not a sober man in community; but if there is not a reformation soon, we shall become a nation of drunkards. We heartily approve of the law passed by our Legislature last winter, and shall use our utmost exertions and influence to prevent its repeal.

J. PAINE.
