Hugh Maher, a Johnson County Farmer, Arrested For Threatening to Kill THEIR AUTO BROKE DOWN

Maher, Who Was Drunk, Drove Up While Repairs Were Being Made, and Meeting With Refusal to Pay Him $500 at Once, Swore He Would Kill the Tourists.

Iowa City, Aug. 19.-Hugh Maher, a leading young farmer of Johnson county, the owner of a 200-acre farm near Morse, was arrested by Constable Slater and brought to Iowa City today to answer to the charge of threatening to kill and attempting to extort. Maher is accused of threatening to kill J. C. and Ernest Pickering, prominent citizens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who were recently here on an automobile tour. Their "auto" broke down, and during the subsequent siege, they swear, Maher declared he would kill them unless they immediately paid him $500. Maher gave a bond of $250, and will appear before Justice Barber for a hearing on Sept. 2.
