The most recent intelligence from France is highly favourable to the friends of republicanism and liberty. Some particulars we are enabled to state as follows :—The camp-marshal Omorean had nearly driven the despotic forces from his part of the French frontier—A misunderstanding of a serious nature had happened between the duke of Brunswick and the king of Prussia; their forces were reduced to the most mortifying extremity, their provisions being absolutely exhausted, and their sustenance very little more than the horses that died of famine and fatigue—M. Dumourier's army was 70,000 strong (effective men) including 12,000 cavalry—the enemy on the frontiers of Brabant had been repulsed, and St. Amand and the camp of Maulde retaken—In London, upon a suspicion that the court were inclined to join the league against France, bills had been pasted up every where inscribed, "Peace with France, or a revolution in London." Lisle and Thionville were still besieged, but no probability of either being taken; the former assailed by 31,000 Austrians : on the 1st of October 8000 women and children were sent out of the town. The enemy had thrown into Lisle 500,000 wt. of balls, from 9 batteries of 6 guns each, carrying balls from 15 to 33 lbs.—in return, the garrison had discharged upon them 57,000 cannon balls; having only lost 130 men, and about 100 houses burnt. On the night of the 2d of October the French found means to throw into Lisle 2000 fresh troops. A declaration of war from the whole German empire, with the addition of Spain, was hourly expected when these accounts came away—the Prussian army was in the most critical situation, had but 3 days provision, and it was thought could not avoid being cut to pieces by the determined troops of France.
