Fleet Reported Off
Nunivak Island
SEATTLE, (P)—At least 50 Russian trawlers and 10 refrigerator and support ships are lying off Nunivak Island in the Bering Sea, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer said Monday.
The newspaper said Sen. Magnuson (D-Wash) had been notified at Washington, D. C., of the presence of the Russian fleet by the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries. It is a full month earlier than the appearance of such Russian boats last year, Magnuson said.
The Russians this year are using stern trawlers which can withstand heavy weather and go out earlier than usual, and are apparently equipped for bottom fishing, Magnuson was quoted.
The fleet would be able to convert to salmon fishing by changing its kind of gear, he said. Its position was described as virtually in the path of salmon runs that will head up the Yukon.
Magnuson was also quoted as criticizing the State Department for not taking the threat to American fishing seriously enough. He also urged the government to create an interest among American fishermen to take up bottom fishing.
"Unless we get action," he said "we will be run off the seas—but everywhere."
