Full Text
SCALPING,—It is, says the N. York Courier, related as an incident of the Black Hawk War, that the editor of the Illinois Galenaian, Mr. Robert Graham, not only participated in the general conflict, but actually scalped two Indians with his own hands. In a skirmish he shot down one of them, and rushing upon him drew the scalping knife from the side of the wounded savage. Proceeding to apply it to the cranium of the wounded proprietor, who winced at the deep tonsure, he consoled the red man, saying, "Never mind, my old friend, it will soon be over. The instrument is cursed dull—and I would advise you hereafter to keep a sharper knife." Death had in reserve a sharper knife for the tantalizing editor. He died after his return to Galena on the 13th ult. of the epidemic Cholera.
