What is this article about?

In the California House, Rep. Sorrell (Siskiyou) contested a Daily News report falsely claiming he supported a recess in a Douglas caucus, denying involvement and jabbing at Rep. Conness (El Dorado). Conness retorted that Sorrell's anti-Scott stance made such affiliation implausible.

A Georgian on Gen. Scott, and an Irishman on a Georgian:

Mr. Sorrell rose to a question of privilege—to call the attention of the House to a statement in an obscure publication in this city, perhaps known to a few for its misrepresentations—and of which, he said, that it was called the "Daily News," and that it was published every morning, Monday excepted, at twenty-five cents per week. [Laughter.]

The statement was, that at a Douglas caucus he (Mr. Sorrel) spoke in favor of a recess of fifteen minutes. If any further evidence of his insanity, besides that found by the gentleman from El Dorado (Mr. Conness,) was wanting, that statement would have clinched it. But it was not true, and he trusted that he might never be in a caucus with the gentleman from El Dorado. If he had been there, instead of speaking for the recess, he should have done what the Douglas party themselves subsequently agreed to—a recess for an indefinite period. They had taken a recess, and he did not think they would ever again be convened.

Mr. Conness said it was unnecessary for the gentleman from Siskiyou (Mr. Sorrel) to rise to a question of privilege on such a subject. The people of California would never be convinced by any mere newspaper statement that a gentleman capable of introducing a resolution condemning General Scott could ever be found a member of a Douglas caucus. [Applause.]

Mr. Sorrell raised a question of privilege in the House regarding a false statement in the Daily News claiming he spoke in favor of a recess at a Douglas caucus. He denied it, referenced his resolution condemning General Scott, and expressed hope to avoid future caucuses with Mr. Conness from El Dorado. Mr. Conness dismissed the need for privilege, stating the public would not believe Sorrell was in a Douglas caucus given his views on Scott.
