Editor Democrat:—I noticed in the Appeal, of the 23d inst., a communication purporting to have been written by a Republican of New York Flat, in which the writer, after affecting considerable modesty lest he might be considered desirous of acquiring notoriety as a newspaper correspondent, and affirming his attachment to and desire for the success of the principles of the Republican party, proceeds to say: "The news came to me a few days ago that Mr. C. E. DeLong, the Douglas candidate for State Senator, has been industriously circulating the report in this section of the county, that the Republicans are going to fuse with the Douglasites, and all vote for him, and he has attempted to make individual Republicans believe such was the case, and induce them to vote for him."
I also see in the same paper, a letter from Mr. DeLong, denying the truth of that report, which I have no doubt is sufficient, but I have naught further to say on the subject. It is the general belief here that no Republican of New York Flat, or even of Yuba county, is the author of the communication in question but that a certain man in the adjoining county, somewhat noted for his own zeal in the cause he advocates, has thought the people of Yuba county incompetent to attend to their own affairs, and has therefore interposed his wisdom and judgment in their behalf, in directing what course is proper and right for them to pursue in their own local affairs.
The Republicans in this vicinity are considered honorable and intelligent men, who understand their own wants and can provide for them without the counsel or advice of any Butte county man. I have no doubt but some of the Republicans in this vicinity will vote for Mr. DeLong, the statement of the New York Flat Butte county correspondent of the Appeal to the contrary notwithstanding. I also have reason to believe that some of the Breckinridge men will vote for Mr. DeLong as they believe him to be a straightforward, honorable man, and true to the principles he advocates.
I see statements in the Express that Mr. DeLong is going over the county indulging in personalities and vile epithets towards Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Breckinridge. This statement I also see contradicted. We had the pleasure of listening to a speech from Mr. DeLong at Forbestown a short time ago, and it was acknowledged by men of all parties that a more courteous, dignified and argumentative speech had not been made in this vicinity during the campaign. Mr. DeLong certainly acquitted himself with great credit and is fast gaining friends. This the opposition see, and as they cannot match him in sound argument they have to resort to other means to try and crush him. But "truth crushed to earth shall rise again."
Yours,
H. M. Eddy.
