Full Text

Sermon.-On Christmas day, a very eloquent discourse was delivered at the Presbyterian Church, on 4½ street, by the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Sunderland, who took his text from Genesis, 31st chapter, 49th verse. Having spoken of the mementos that the day awakened, the preacher divided his discourse into three parts, namely: the spirit of friendship, the prayer of friendship, and the monuments of friendship, on which he dilated in a very impressive and eloquent manner. The conclusion of his discourse consisted of a review of the former ministers who had occupied that pulpit, in the course of which, the Rev. Mr. Sunderland passed a high eulogium upon his predecessor, the Rev. Mr. Gallagher, who now sleeps the last sleep in the far west. The congregation was very large, and among those present, we observed the President and his lady, both of whom were looking remarkably well: also several Senators and Members of the House.
