Full Text
We received the 4th Instant by a Flag of Truce, two Letters from the Governor of Merida. The first, dated the 5th of July, intimated, that by erecting a Fort, and bringing down Soldiers, was, as they imagined, with a View to maintain and make this Place our own, which was actually contrary to the crowned Heads; and that unless we could produce Authority from his Britannick Majesty, for settling this Place, we must depart hence; neither did he limit any Time for our so doing.
The second is dated the 14th of Sept. and intimates, that we had been guilty of a Breach of Peace, in erecting said Fortifications, as it never was his Intention to suffer his People to commit any Hostilities, neither as yet had they: Therefore must directly depart from the Bay, or else he would forthwith dispatch an Army to drive us.
