Full Text
Gen. Jackson left the Hermitage on Sunday, the 11th inst., on his return to the seat of government. He intends to proceed through the States of Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania. His object in selecting this route cannot be mistaken by the dullest sense. It is a bold and shameless effort to effect, by his personal efforts, a reaction in the public mind, in favor of Van Buren, by publicly espousing the pretensions of that arch-intriguer, and abusing his competitors. But we hope and believe that this prostitution of the dignity of his office will have an effect the reverse of that anticipated by himself and his advisers. No independent mind will hesitate a moment in spurning this attempt at personal and official dictation. It is the first time that any President has ever openly entered the field as an electioneerer for his successor; but it is also the first time that a President has ever dared to nominate his successor. The people have it now in their power to rebuke the Dictator by defeating his Favorite. Let them act otherwise, and the fatal precedent will have been set, which will be recognized as law hereafter, by which the choice of their Chief Magistrate will have been wrested from their hands, and the Executive Department will be completely assimilated to an hereditary Monarchy—hereditary, not in the family of the President, but in the circle of his favorites.
