Malone Baffles Brooklyn to Increase Cub's League Lead
38,000 Spectators Cheer Star Flinger As Robins Are Blanked Consistently Until Two Are Out in Ninth Inning
CHICAGO, Aug 14 (AP) - The brawny right arm of Percy Malone throttled the Brooklyn Robins to a mere chirp today and derricked the Cubs back into a full game lead in the bitter fight for the National league pennant.
Backed by faultless support and bunched hits early in the struggle that carried him over the top, the big fireman from Altoona, Pa., gave Robinson's warriors just eight scattered blows and conquered them 5 to 1 in the third game of the first place series.
Thirty-eight thousand spectators gave him a big ovation as he waded through the Flatbush ranks with his famous smoke ball that never worked more effectively.
He struck out six, walked but three, and permitted but one man to reach third up until the final inning.
But for a careless let-up in the ninth inning, Malone would have daubed the whitewash on the Robins. Rube Bressler opened the inning with a meek single and when the next two batters flied out, Bressler was permitted to jog around to third base without a play. Then Johnny Frederick came through with a single over second that scored Bressler and wiped out what looked like an almost certain shut-out.
