JACKSONVILLE, Aug. 9—
During the first year of its incumbency the State Welfare Board received 36,278 applications for Old Age Assistance which, added to the 8,416 pending when it was inducted into office on July 1, 1937 brought the total number of applications to 44,694.
Of the applications filed, 21,423 were approved 4,100 rejected 1,000 disposed of for other reasons with 12,227 pending as of June 30, 1938.
Other statistics made public at the state office of the board here today showed that 16,015 persons were receiving Old Age Assistance when the board took charge and that at the end of the first fiscal year 28,468 were on the rolls. Death had claimed 1,050 of a total of 3,015, who had been removed for various causes.
The total grant had increased from $126,240.74, to $428,915.00 while the average individual grant has increased from $11.58 to $14.53.
The following statistics for Monroe county for the yearly period:
Including July 1, 1937, 122, applications received July 1 to June 30, 1938, 514 total applications, 656 to be acted upon. July 1 June 30 430 approved, 80 rejected disposed for other reason 27 applications pending June 30, 1938.
Original estimates submitted to the legislature and based on a social security survey made by the former State Board of Social Welfare had placed the number of eligibles at 27,304 for the state and at 500 for Monroe county.
Estimates have been largely exceeded.
