SAN DIEGO, June 8.-One of the most notable events in the history of San Diego since this city became a naval base of importance is the visit of Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby and his party today and tomorrow. The U. S. S. Henderson. on board which the navy executive and his party arrived. is en route to Japan where the Americans will be the guests of Admiral Uriu, of the imperial Japanese navy.
Mr. Denby's visit here will be his only stop on the west coast. In honor of his coming the army, navy and marine corps have joined with civic organizations to make his visit a memorable one. A reception at the municipal pier today was followed by a great outdoor luncheon at the new $500,000 marine barracks, in the arcade of which, fronting nearly 2,000 feet along the harbor, the longest table on record was spread.
Covers were laid for 1,000 guests. A review of detachments of the three branches of the military establishment, together with an aerial demonstration of several score of planes, came immediately after the luncheon.
A public lawn fete in Balboa park. and a banquet tomorrow. are other features of the secretary's visit. The city is entertaining thousands of persons from nearby states who are expected to join in the welcome of Secretary Denby.
