Thinking About The 'Look' For 1961

By GAY PAULEY

NEW YORK (UPI)-Spring fashion collections provide something for everybody - all we women have to do is decide on a personal-"look" for 1961.

We can go gay and giddy with color, or stick to black and white, neutral gray or beige.

We can choose full skirts, or slim skirts, or trouser skirts for the spring suit or ensemble. And coats come from sweeping pyramid silhouettes to straight columns with slits at the sides.

We can keep our hemlines high, hovering just at the knee where they've been for a couple of seasons, or haul them down almost to mid-calf, if we prefer a look promulgated by the French-born designer, Pauline Trigere.

NO BIG TREND

For the biggest news to come from the New York collections shown the last four weeks to buyers and fashion reporters is that there is no one gigantic trend, as we've had in past seasons when the sack or the raised waistline empire dominated

Instead there are many small changes, mostly in color, fabric and details.

Take the matter of color. Brilliant is the most apt way to describe some of the new pinks, blues, yellows and greens which overwhelm the muted tones that still are around. An example of the trend to bright tones is in what Jacques Tiffeau created for his Tiffeau-Busch collection. There was little other than pink in his collection, ranging from pale rose to bright watermelon and peony.

For the woman scared of strong colors, there still will be neutral shades Less navy than in previous seasons, but designers love the "strong" tones-off-white, ivory and pale beige.

FABRICS GROW AIRIER

Fabrics grow airier each season Woolens have a spongy, souffle texture. Cottons in turn look more like wool The silk print dress paired with a solid shade coat is a favorite at all houses. And at Trigere, there is a group of costumes in sheer wools which look like cotton denim, batiste or gingham.
