Full Text

The administration of this state government has exhibited, on the part of governor Strong not only an undeviating attention to the welfare of the state, but a strongly marked disposition to unite and conciliate parties. His speeches are acknowledged moderate, being generally confined to such principles as even the malignity of opposition cannot convert. What is the consequence ? Are his slanderers won ? Do they yield a just tribute to his amiable qualities ? No, far otherwise. Even his mildness is subject of abuse. It may be found on reviewing the democratic papers, that they honor it with the name of a milk and water speech. And in the senate, it was frequently pronounced by the democrats, with a sneer, a very harmless thing. Correct principles they acknowledged, but he had not indulged in that severity of allusion which no doubt guilty consciences anticipated.

It is not for governor Strong to enter the lists with his enemies. Firm to virtue and his country's good, his mind dwells inflexibly on the important duties of his station. " I doubt not. Son, said the great statesman Lorenzo de Medici, " that you will hereafter possess the same weight and authority in the state, which I have hitherto enjoyed; but as the republic, although it forms but one body, has many heads, you must not expect that it will be possible for you, on all occasions, so to conduct yourself as to obtain the approbation of every individual. Remember-therefore, in every situation, to pursue that course of conduct which integrity prescribes and to consult the interests of the whole community rather than the gratification of any particular part of it."

His excellency's deportment has ever appeared to be governed by the dying monition of Lorenzo. He pursues, with firmness and uniformity . the path of political duty, designated for him by the obligation of his station. And if the base plots & conspiracies of his enemies cannot ruffle his mind, nor excite the least symptom of resentment in his official language, must that very circumstance be fresh cause of insult ?
