HOUSTON ()- Mike Souchak, after winning $8,500 in 11 days, headed for Baton Rouge, La., to- day to try to run his winter golf tour victory string to three tourna- ments.
The muscular Souchak used a 7- under-par 65 fourth round yester- day to pocket the tour's richest prize, $6,000 in top money in the $30,000 Houston Open. A week ear- lier he won $2,500 with the Texas Open title in San Antonio.
His is the year's second leading money winner, his $10,003.33 just $37.34 behind Gene Littler.
Yesterday's performance enab- led the 210-pound Souchak to win with a 72-hole 273 - 15 under par for the 7,200-yard, par-72 Memo- rial Park course. His 65 and early rounds of 70, 71 and 67 left him two strokes ahead of little Jerry Barber, Los Angeles, who had 70- 71-63-71-275 and won $3,500.
Jack Burke Jr., the 1952 winner, and Shelley Mayfield, one of Mid- dlecoff's victims in the 1953 play- off, trailed Barber by three strokes at 278. Each won $2,000.
Julius Boros, Mid Pines, N. C., and Buster Cupit, West Monroe, La., with Peter Thomson, Mel- bourne, Australia, and Jack Har- den, El Paso, Tex., each picked up $1,225.
