DIGGS BLASTS TRANSFER OF NEGRO GI's

Congressman Charles C. Diggs. Jr. (D-Mich.) today asked Secretary of the Army Wilber M. Brucker to rescind a reported Army recommendation that Negroes married to German girls transfer out of the Fort Hood, Texas- bound Second Armored Division to avoid alleged anticipated embarrassment. Diggs said: "If personal factors relating to social or community pressures of one type or another are to influence assignment of members of the Armed Forces personnel, the ultimate result could be to re-instate, through direct means, even more flagrant discriminatory practices than have already been banned in the services." The full text of the Michigan Congressman's telegram follows:

"Sept. 6, 1957

Honorable Wilber M. Brucker

Secretary of the Army

Washington 25. D.C.

"The Associated Press" reports from Bad Krauznach, Germany, that the United States Army, based upon alleged anticipated embarrassment,, has recommended that Negroes who have married German girls transfer out of the Fort Hood. Texas-bound Second Armored Division. Respectfully request immediate substantiation of this report. If said report is true, further request that such an order be rescinded. 'If personal factors relating to social or community pressures of one type or another are to influence assignment of members of the Armed Forces personnel, the ultimate result could be to re-institute, through direct means, even more flagrant discriminatory practices than have already been banned in the services."
