Where We Stand
The Town Crier is the only local paper serving the Town of Newington. Because of this, and because our subscribers are of every shade of political opinion, we do not intend to formally endorse any party or persons in the coming election. Were this a metropolis where warring political factions could find support and expression on the editorial pages of sympathetic newspapers, we would feel obliged to support that party and those persons whose political philosophy and intent were closest to our convictions.
This does not mean, however, that the Town Crier intends to abdicate its role as a free newspaper. We serve one vested interest only, and that interest is the Town of Newington. The Town Crier will be speaking its mind in the campaign on every issue we consider important--let the chips fall where they may.
Speaking of issues--both political parties now engaged in writing their respective platforms can do no less than offer the voters action on legislative problems that can no longer be ignored or obfuscated. The financing of education looms as perhaps the biggest issue facing the next legislature. Taxes and what form they will take will determine whether this State will meet its present and future growth needs.
Some of our most urgently needed reforms will never see the light of legislative day this session because by their nature they have become political footballs and will continue to be booted around in the political game that will be played at the Capitol.
One such situation crying for reform is represented by the gerrymandered State map. Senatorial redistricting would restore proper representation to the people of the State of Connecticut and put an end to the unfair and undemocratic advantage enjoyed by tiny rural communities over towns like Newington. While it would be unrealistic to expect much progress on this score except after a long and bitter struggle, it would be refreshing to hear what local candidates think ought to be done about issues like this.
