Undoubtedly! And to carry out this "earnestly desired" object, the administration ordered Gen. Taylor to march into the Mexican possessions—(disputed territory if you please)—plant his standard in their cultivated fields—point his cannon within range of one of their towns and blockade her ports! That's it. If you have an earnest desire to settle a quarrel with a man, pull his nose!—Keene Sentinel.
The administration did not order Gen. Taylor to "march into Mexican possessions." He was ordered to Corpus Christi with instructions to tarry there or advance to the Rio Grande as he might think fit, and as might be necessary to protect the territory of Texas from a hostile invasion. In the meantime, President Paredes ordered Gen. Arista to Matamoros, with instructions to "take the initiative" and over-run and re-conquer the whole of Texas, even to the Sabine. Then Gen. Taylor advanced, without further instructions, to the Rio Grande, to repel the invasion. He kept on this side of the river, and within the territory of the United States, until the attack upon and murder of Capt. Thornton's command, and the attack upon his army at Palo Alto and Resaca. There he beat the Mexicans, and pursued them into their own territory. This is what such prints as the Keene Sentinel, sympathizing with the Mexicans, call "marching into the Mexican possessions"!
