Bozeman - Now is the time to check pigs for parasites - particularly roundworms, says Dr. E. A. Tunnicliff, head of the Veterinary Research Laboratory at Montana State College.

"Diagnosis shows many baby pigs are infested with roundworms this year," he reports.

"Large roundworms cause heavier losses for Montana hog producers than any other parasite."

If small pigs aren't doing well and are subject to attacks of diarrhea, parasites may be the trouble - especially if the pigs are on the ground that has been used by hogs for a number of years.

Parasites can be controlled with a combination of medical agents and swine sanitation practices. Dr. Tunnicliff advises treating both sows and baby pigs before they're moved out to summer pasture.

He suggests that growers see their veterinarian before treating for parasites in hogs since he can advise on the best corrective treatment after making a check of the pigs.

It isn't half as far from virtue to vice as vice versa.
