Full Text

The Boston Traveller says: "The Springfield Republican sees in General Butler's recent visit to Massachusetts a movement to secure his election as delegate at large to the Republican National Convention. As usual, that paper is mistaken. We have the best authority for saying that General Butler does not desire to be a delegate to that convention, and will not permit the use of his name as a candidate. More than that, the best men of the party are opposed to the election of any member of Congress or federal office holder as a delegate, and the great body of the Republicans of the country will agree on that point. And it is believed that President Grant is strongly in favor of the adoption of this principle in the choice of delegates.—Evening Post."
