The New York Herald contains an affidavit signed by seven emigrants from Liverpool, in which they say-"we were induced to emigrate to this country, upon the representations of Ship Brokers and their runners-that upon arriving in this country, we found it impossible to obtain work, and applied to the agents of these ships, and offered to work for our board-that they sent us to 'Tapscott's poor-house and hospital,' situated at Flatbush, where we were obliged to do laboring work, digging and wheeling."
These emigrants complain of the bad and unwholesome quality of the food furnished at the Hospital mentioned; and state, that there are inmates of said establishment who are "lying sick, and in the most pitiful and wretched condition of suffering." In consequence of the treatment which they have received from the agents of the ships in which they arrived, they have been compelled to apply to be admitted to the alms-house of New York.
This kind of ship-brokerage is carried to a great extent in England and Germany; and the persons engaged in the business practice the grossest deceptions in order to induce the ignorant to emigrate to the United States. In consequence of these impositions by ship-brokers and their runners, the following notice has been published:
"Messrs. E. K. Collins & Co. respectfully request the publishers of newspapers to discontinue all advertisements not in their name of their Liverpool packets, viz: the Roscius, Siddons, Sheridan and Garrick. To prevent disappointment, notice is hereby given, that contracts for passage can only be made with them."
