The Independents,
Pursuant to notice of Lew Ross and Jake Cosler a meeting was held at the court house, in Lewistown, on Wednesday afternoon last. We have no room for even an attempt at the proceedings this week.
Previous to the calling of the convention to order the managers met in Job Walker's office, and arranged a programme as follows, to-wit:
Chairman—I. F. Elrod.
Secretary—G. A. Hyde and A. Davison.
Shope cornered Elrod in front of the Standard House and gave him the "idee" of committees &c. The secretary part of the programme fell through because Alpheus was not regarded as reliable, and was therefore not appointed a delegate.
This programme was further interfered with by the obstreperousness—so to speak—of one wing of the Joshua delegation. That wing didn't like Shope to run the chairman, but preferred to have Cosler for chairman and let Job Walker run him.
Early in the day it was understood that Dave Waggoner was the man for sheriff, Ed Maynard for surveyor, and Charles Kelsa for coroner. Noses were counted and it was found they could be nominated Shope, Lew Ross, Job Walker and others didn't like it.
The candidates were all from the north half of the county and the programme had to be changed. In fact the bucolics found they were but as clay in the hands of the potter. Shope, Ross and Zal Green were the potter. And that's the way Levi Horton came to be named as coroner.
The others were swallowed.
Every one of them have been in office or candidates for office for the last six years. We shall give their official record, compiled from the county records, in due time.
The Congressional and Senatorial delegates are:
