The following toasts were drank at a dinner of the Alexandria Rifle Company, commanded by Capt. W. A. Harper, on Monday 5th July, at Smith's Grove, near the Federal Spring:--
The day we celebrate may the principles which actuated our fathers ever be cherished by their descendants.
The memory of WASHINGTON--when freemen in arms their convivial adoration pay, the host of heaven approves.
The heroes of the revolution--millions unborn shall venerate their names, and the rising infant be taught to lisp their praise.
The French army of 1778--time will not eradicate from the minds of Americans the gratitude due for their support in the struggle for independence, whatever may be their opinion of the policy of its government.
The President of the United States--the favorite magistrate of a free people.
The heads of departments--wise in council; in peace or war, cool, temperate, and determined.
Union of parties--provided it be bottomed on principle, the general interest not party domination.
General Jackson, the Hero of Orleans--his promptitude and decision in Florida has added an additional wreath to his brow.
The officers and soldiers of the late war--as citizens we acknowledge obligations. as soldiers we congratulate them on their merited honors.
The army and navy--may they ever appreciate the approbation of their country as their greatest reward.
The Congress of the United States--away with all calculating policy, reward liberally, and in the hour of national danger the defenders of their country will show their daring spirit.
De La Fayette, a hero of the revolution, a virtuous politician--may the scion of the tree of liberty, transplanted by them on the continent, again vegetate, and all Europe recline under its branches.
Freemen in arms, the legitimate guardians of their rights--when united and marshalled in their country's cause, an ambitious chieftain will never dare to attempt the subversion of their liberties.
The fair sex--Venus, Minerva, and the Graces, have endowed them with their attributes, by creation's order--the consummation of perfection and joys, for an apprentice hand made man, a master hand woman.
