In nothing else has a greater improvement taken place about Alexandria, than in the lots in the suburbs, and adjacent to town. Within the last few years, nearly all the lots have been taken up, well enclosed, and highly cultivated. By a judicious course of treatment, the land has become rich, and capable of making a great yield to the acre. Timothy, Wheat, Rye, Oats, Barley, Corn, &c. &c. are raised on these lots to an extent, which would astonish those who base their calculations upon the yield of the poor and unimproved lands in Virginia. The consequence of all this has been, that the lots have greatly increased in value, and that the proprietors are reaping rich rewards for their industry and perseverance. From any elevated situation west of the town, the eye takes in at a single glance the whole level from Hunting Creek to Four Mile Run, and a more beautiful country cannot be seen—chequered as it is, with fields of small size, containing the various descriptions of grain and grass, with their different hues and shades. This improvement in the lands adjacent to town is an additional source of prosperity to the town itself.
