SIDE LINES AND
BUSY SIGNALS
by S. H. Green
The Mid-Winter Dog Day
Unknown to many who take but vapid interest in the ever-changing panorama of human affairs, near tragedy has stalked the heart of boyhood in recent days. The reason is that Nero, or Shep, or Rover, or Lad must be registered and tagged along the same lines as father's automobile. And failing in this, Hector's only alternative is to cease to be.
Perhaps it's rather a far-fetched figure to say that there are black sheep even in the best of canine families, but the cause of Sonny Boy having to plank down a dollar at the county auditor's office before the 21st of each January is the inherent habit of Fido's lupine ancestors of mingling with the ovine wool-bearers.
John Law has no favorites, and the tiniest mite of caninehood that couldn't harm the most timid of sheep, wears the same size tag as the huge wolf-hound. So boyhood has hoarded its pennies and eagerly awaited the zero hour when the final family council should decide as to whether or not Sport had out-lived his allotted span of usefulness, or if the budget could bear the strain of the three dollars necessary for Lady. It doesn't make any difference whether Lady is a blonde or not, she may be a brunette, or of a rainbow hue, but the auditor is certain, that to him, at least, she is worth just three times as much as any gentleman dog in the county.
So, in mid-winter, the dog has its day of trial: the grim watch dog, the household pet, the stray waif, each must pay a tribute towards the evil deeds its canine fellows will do among the fleecy flocks in many a scattered pasture throughout the coming year.
