"WHO'S THE DUPE."

"We understand that the Hon. Jesse B. Thomas has removed himself and family from this town to the state of Missouri."

Spectator, Nov. 2, 1822.

"It is due to Judge Thomas to state, that he resides within a few steps of this office--that he was in this town when the last Edwardsville Spectator was issued. We are authorized to say that he has not the remotest intention of removing from this state."

Star of the West, Nov. 9, 1822.

The article last above quoted was, we have no doubt, "authorized" by Judge Thomas. He was, at the time, passing through this place on his way to Washington; and he admitted to a friend, that his family had removed to Missouri, but without his approbation--that he had ordered them to come back, and they would return immediately. We stated these facts at the time, and the Star did not again attempt to controvert them, until the 30th of November, (the week preceding the commencement of the session of the legislature) when the arrival of "Judge Thomas's family, after a short visit to their friends in Missouri," was pompously announced; and we were stigmatized as "a Catspaw to a party that wished to monopolize all the offices in the state," for having said any thing about his removal.

But to the sequel. The male part of the family attended at Vandalia during the pendency of the Senatorial Election--the other part remaining in this town. As soon as the election was over, they re-packed their furniture, and went back to Missouri; and they do not now pretend that they have any intention to reside any longer in this state, for several years at least, if ever.

Now, we would ask, who are KNAVES, and who are the DUPES?
