New-York, May 12.
ONE DAY LATER from LONDON
By the ship Marcellus, which arrived
at this port on Saturday evening from
Liverpool, the editors have received papers
of the 3d of April, (being one day
the latest) from which the following extracts
are made.
From the London Courier of April 8.
The debates in both houses last night
were important. In the house of lords
the marquis of Buckingham brought forward
his motion relative to the state of
Ireland. Moderation, anxiety for the
welfare of Ireland, and a desire to adopt
any measures calculated really to do
good to that part of the empire, were the
prominent features of the debate. The
Catholic question was, in most of the
speeches, considered, as it always ought
to have been, a minor grievance, the
removal of which would do nothing towards
the amelioration of the condition
of the Irish people. After all, the improvement
of the situation of the Irish
depends, as we have invariably maintained,
less upon our government than
upon the great landed proprietors of
estates in Ireland. The Marquis of
Buckingham's motion was negatived, by
a majority of 137 to 67.
In the house of commons, certain cases
in which the severity of the excise
system has been mitigated by the interference
of the treasury, were brought
forward by the opposition; and one of
them, the case of a Mr. Gibbs, was made
the subject of a motion. He had entered
a cargo of salt at 300 bushels, which, upon
being measured, was found to amount
to 315 bushels. It was conceived that a
change in the atmosphere might have occasioned
a greater surplus weight. No
attempt had been made to bribe the excise
officer, and part of the fine was remitted!
And this was the most prominent
case upon which the party relied!
Lord Castlereagh was very happy in his
comments upon the anxiety of the modern
whigs to enforce the most vigorous
execution of the excise laws.
The motion was negatived not by a
majority of 76, as all the morning papers
have stated, but by a majority of
92, the numbers for the motion being 48
and against it 140.
We have received this morning Paris
papers of Sunday last. They continue
to be unimportant. French funds 58 fr.

LONDON MARKETS.
Cotton.--The demand for cotton continues
animated and general, the prices
gradually improving: the advance since
our last may be stated from 1/2d 1d per
lb. and so great is their scarcity, that
purchasers watch every trivial arrival
with anxiety. 21d has been offered and
refused for a small parcel of Boweds
newly imported. On account of the
market being nearly cleared of cotton,
the sales of last week little exceed 1,200
bags, viz. 470 Pernams, 2s 4 to 2s 5d;
80 Barrels, 2s 2d to 2s 2d 1/4; small
parcels of Paras; 2s 1 1/2d. 80 Orleans.
2s 1 1/2: 70 Smyrna, 2 1/2; 157 Demarara,
2s 1/5/8d a 2s 4 5/8d; and 400
Sarats and Bengals at an advance of 1d
to 5d per lb on the two last East India
sale prices.
Sugar.--The demand for Muscovado
does continued very limited last week:
the prices for good Sugars were firmly
maintained: the inferior browns could
be purchased very low. 53 hogsheads of
Guadaloupe Muscovadoes went off readily
at 71s 6d. In the refined market a
farther depression of 2s a 3s has been
submitted to. brown Lumps selling at
112s; crushed Sugar 69s. This fore-
noon's public sale of Clayed Sugar consisted
of 466 casks Guadaloupe Clayeds.
the prices at the close of the sale may
be stated 4s a 5s per cwt. lower: first
lot strong 4 me sold 101s; about thirty
casks fine 4 me sold 105s 109s 6d. Generally
the Communes sold at 80, lowest
price 77s: Terres 85s a 96s.
Coffee.--The quantity of coffee bro't
forward by public sale last week, consisted
of 80 casks and 1,453 bags the
greater proportion being Dutch, a further
decline of 2s may be stated on these
descriptions: the other qualities were
unvaried. This forenoon's public sales
consisted of 149 casks and 263 bags. the
quantity too trivial to constitute a market
currency. As far, however, as they
can be taken as a criterion, the prices
may be stated 2s to 5s higher: considerable
parcels of ordinary middling Dutch
72s 6d. a 74s. 6d.
Tobacco--The demand has been languid;
and, though no alteration can yet
be stated in the currency, the late prices
are with difficulty realized.
Cocoa.--By public sale last week 237
bags ordinary Caraccas Cocoa sold at 71.
to 71. 10s.
Naval Stores.--There have been no
new arrivals of turpentine; the last realized
price was 18s. Spirits, tower
drawn, are very heavy at 75s. The limited
sales of tar and rosin are at prices
a shade lower; the quotations of American
tar may be stated nearly nominal.
Ashes.--There are very few ashes in
the market: and in consequence of the
briskness of the demand at Liverpool.
the holders here are asking an advance
American Pots, 85s. a 90s; Russia ashes
64s. a 65s.
