The next President. We predicted that the republicans of New-York would imitate the Example of the Ward Meetings of Philadelphia, and the event has exactly verified our prediction.

On the 15th inst. a meeting of the REPUBLICAN GENERAL COMMITTEE, Was held at Martling's long room, in the city of N. York, at which they came to the following resolution:

"Resolved unanimously, that it be recommended to our Republican fellow-Citizens of the ninth Ward to convene on Tuesday Evening next, the 21st instant and to the other respective wards on Wednesday Evening next, the 22nd instant, for the purpose of appointing a General Committee to consist of twenty-one Delegates from each ward, to prepare, sign, and transmit a respectful and earnest address to THOMAS JEFFERSON, President of the United States, requesting him to consent to be a candidate at the next election for that important office, which he at present fills with honor and dignity to himself and usefulness to his country."

"Resolved unanimously, that the committee to be appointed by the respective wards be requested to assemble at Martling's Tavern, on Friday Evening next, the 24th instant, at six o'clock precisely, and that they also be requested to prepare and sign an address to our republican fellow-citizens of the different counties in this state requesting their co-operation and influence in promoting the particular object of this meeting."

* Is this a standing committee, or one merely appointed for the removal of "some pressing and momentary evil?" If it be the former, we consider such associations at war with the genuine principles of republicanism and of reason.

To such of the republicans in New-York: as advocate this drilling system, we particularly recommend the chapter on "political associations," in the first vol. of the "Political Justice." No doubt Mr. Wortman has the book in his Library.

An expression escaped us, during the hurry of composition for our last paper, which, is susceptible of a meaning that we did not intend to convey. Speaking of Alcibiades, we called-it a "little production." We meant only to refer to the length of a production, which had excited so much discussion in the federal prints.
