Mayor Sensenbrenner stood firmly on his Democratic platform this week-the same platform from which he hopes to step back into the office of Columbus' mayor-and re-asserted his views on how to make the city a better place in which to live.
The voluble official stated that the first plank in his platform was the hiring of a finance director for the city.
Sensenbrenner also sees a need for the equalization of police and fire pay, the raising of that pay to meet standards set in most other large cities in the country. He said that there should be more police and fire department buildings, with police precinct stations in the same building with neighborhood fire stations.
Traffic congestion in the city brought forward the Mayor's ideas of a master control plan for traffic, better means of mass transportation with school bus rates for children Elimination of railroad crossings, begun under the Sensenbrenner administration, must be continued, the Mayor emphasized.
A strong slum elimination program is also part of his platform, he said.
"Columbus is getting to be a big city. When I came into office, there were only 41 square miles. Now there are 54. We have annexed over 8000 acres. We've got to keep in step with the city's growth. All these things have got to be done."
The eyes of the city will be turned on the Mayor and his Republican opponent, Councilman Joseph R. Jones, when they engage in a debate Thursday under the auspices of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and again on Sunday when the two candidates appear on Radio Station WBNS on the Town Meeting of the Air.
