We anticipate our regular day of publication, in order that we may all participate in the celebration at Winchester, on to-morrow, in honor of Mr. Rives. This will account for any lack of Editorial matter in this No. of the Gazette.

THE FIRST ONSLAUGHT. - OMINOUS.

Our readers will perceive, from what follows, that the first battle, preparatory to the great contest in November next, has eventuated in complete success to the Whig cause - and that the prospects of Harrison and Tyler, in the North, are as cheering as they are in the centre and west of the Union. It is not to be disguised, that, from the influences which were brought to bear upon the Connecticut Election - as witness the importation of office holders from the New York Custom House - we faltered in our hopes of Old Connecticut: and so confident were the Loco-focos of carrying the State, that, in advance, the chief organ of the party in Hartford, called upon its allies to prepare for the total rout of the Whig party! But alas, how different the result! The Whig majority is 4,500: four short years ago, Mr. Van Buren's majority was 542.

The Locos have been prating about the ability of the Whigs to gain victories only on paper - and that when the contest came on, the result was sure to falsify their statements: admitting this to be true, for the sake of argument, we will merely remark, that indications show strongly that this is to be the lot of the Locos, for a season. - They are now to console themselves with battles won upon parchment, and victories gained with the pen: whilst the Whig party under the broad banner of Harrison and Tyler, are to gain the substantial victories that will expel the Goths and Vandals from the Capitol, and in their place put those who will take care that the Republic receive no injury - that the public money is not pilfered by every hireling from a Collector of a Port, down to a clerk in a Land Office - that the integrity of the public servants is preserved - and that the general good of the People is attained.

Connecticut leads the van, and Virginia follows: may the example set by the native State of Super Man be responded to by the Old Dominion, the birth-place of Washington and Harrison!

THE PEOPLE HAVE TRIUMPHED - THE
NATION IS FREE!!!

Rejoice, rejoice, the victory is ours! Enough is known to ensure all! Auspicious day! joyful consummation! The question is settled! Thus has the great campaign of 1840 commenced; thus it must close. Connecticut has sustained the mighty shock with the king's forces, with a firmness and gallantry never to be forgotten. Here was the Presidential battle ground; here the destiny of the whole country was staked; upon the issue of the struggle depended the future triumph of Van Buren and Destructive Measures, or of Harrison and Reform! A change of policy and a change of men is decreed! CONNECTICUT has said it! CONNECTICUT has done it! A hundred guns and a thousand cheers for old CONNECTICUT!!

The Baltimore Patriot says: - We may briefly state here, that the Whig majority in the State last year, on the Governor's ticket, was 2544; in 1837, 2397; Presidential election in 1836, Van Buren majority 542. This year the Whig majority will be over 4000! As regards the Legislature, 16 Senators out of 18 heard from, are Whigs; the whole number is 21. The House of Representatives will also comprise an overwhelming majority of Whigs.

This is the opening of the spring campaign, by States, and so signal is the overthrow of the Loco Focos, that it may be regarded as somewhat doubtful whether they will again attempt to stop the victorious march of the people, who have enlisted for the war under the banner of Harrison and Tyler!
