A very distressing steamboat accident happened on the river at New York, late on Thursday night, caused by the explosion of the boiler of the steamer Excelsior, as she was leaving the wharf on the North river. There were some forty or fifty passengers on board at the time of the explosion, some of whom lost their lives, but how many exactly, have not been ascertained. Several are said to be badly injured from scalding and otherwise. The boat soon became enveloped in flames and smoke, and she was finally burnt to the water's edge. The greater number of the passengers fortunately saved their lives by leaping overboard on the Jersey shore. It was a most frightful scene and a distressing calamity. The boat was a new one, and had been launched but a short time. It is not known what was the immediate cause of the explosion.
